Spotlight - Jan Ferreira

Name - Jan Ferreira

Age - 29

Education (School, Tertiary) – Falcon College then Lomagundi College

Clubs played for - Matabeleland Busters, Pirates, Peterborough Lions, Aparejadores Burgos, Durban Collegians, Zimbabwe Goshawks and Zimbabwe Sables (20 caps)

Position played or role if never played – I played Lock and No8 at school. I then played Flank, Wing and Centre in the U.K. After that I played some 7s for Zimbabwe Goshawks and then went back to Lock/Blindside Flank.

Rugby philosophy - There may be days when I look back and have different opinions of how I did things but never will there be a day that I say I didn't try.

Life philosophy - If you worry you die, if you don't worry you still die.

Rugby highlight as a player - Wiinning Africa Cup of Nations in 2012. Was emotional as my dad passed away the day before. So was more than just a game for me.

Rugby highlight in your role - I played against my old school Falcon and Royal Mwale was playing for Falcon. Back in my younger days I was rather quick and I picked up a scrappy ball around 40 meters out and let's just say it's not every day that a lock outruns a wing to score.

Favourite Club Player - That's like asking a parent who is their favorite child. The other 14 blokes are all equally favorites.

Favourite Coach - Brendan Dawson. He has a way of getting me to play 5 levels better than I dream of. Inspirational and passionate are words that only begin to describe him.

Family background / make up (if you want to share this) - I am a 5th Generation Zimbabwean. Both my folks are born in Zim. I have a younger brother. Calling him my little brother doesn't quite work for me as he is bigger than me. We lived on a farm in Zim until the politics hit the farm and we have been a bit nomadic since then. Seen places and met awesome people along the way.

How do you chill? - Horizontal and relaxing when in Cape Town. Otherwise I love being with my mates with an open cooler box and in the bush.

What is it about the Bay that inspires you? - The vibe is very welcoming. I have never been exposed to such a genuine humble atmosphere that inspires excellence. It's amazing.

Who at False Bay inspires you? - Snoop because I can see he has a big part to play in the Club's close knit bonds and booms with pride when the Bay is mentioned.

What do you do to relax or what are your interests outside of rugby? - I am a plaas boerseun. I love being out and the sense of freedom is a drug I constantly crave. I also enjoy designing cool stuff. Need variety in life.

Which club do you enjoy playing against and why? - Old Georgians in Harare. I have good mates there and to bring them down a notch every now and then is awesome.

What is your Dream Sports event, one you would most like to attend? - RWC 2019 with Zimbabwe.

Your favourite rugby moment? -  '95 final. I was rugby mad at 7 years old. I didn't have a Bok jersey so my mom made me one. I remember that entire game and all the Leon Schuster lyrics to his Hie Kommie Bokke album

Your most embarrassing rugby memory? -  I have many oopsies especially when we play touchies. I don't have any outrageous ones.

Who is your funniest team mate? - Beefy Murray

Describe yourself in three words - Soul van die Span.

Training: love it or Hate it? - Love it
