RUGBY UPDATE
- Mike Kros
A good weekend of rugby was had by most. While for some of the teams it was their first outing, others were fortunate to get a game or two under their belt in the last month.
Thanks to Hamilton’s for swopping the venue, it was great to have 5 teams in action at False Bay.
Our U20’s who’s number have slowly grown over the last few weeks had to settle for uncontested scrums as Hammies arrived with only one prop. The youngsters enjoyed 3 x 15min chukka’s allowing the coaches to give around 30 odd players a run. We were outscored by 1 try & a drop goal but I am sure the run was beneficial for our coaches to see what still needs to be achieved. It was great to hear that both teams got together after the game to enjoy some beers and comraderie whilst watching the 2nd & 1st teams.
Still on B FIELD , Footy’s 4th Team hosted TITANS RFC 1st team. They are coached by ex-player and father of Vincent Kayster. Scoreline doesn’t reflect an entertaining game with our lads winning 5-0 but a good contest was enjoyed.
On the A field, our 3rds overcame a tough start when the first points were only scored after 19min of play. Our forwards definitely did the hard work allowing the backs some good attacking ball. TB made a difference when he came on & Stef Swanich still impresses game after game. Newcomer Sifiso looked impressive in the pack but all of the guys deserve credit. Final score 22-0. 4 tries, good work Ryan & Richie.
Our 2’s were their own worst enemy, gifting the opposition 2 intercept tries, allowing their # 11 to cut through our defences time and again. There were definitely good moments, Vinny & Dewaald did well as the half-back pairing, with Salty finding some pace ( or has Vinny lost some pace) to score a great long distance try from a steal at the base of the scrum. Newcomer Kurtly is someone to be watched, his first pick-up at # 8 saw him stepping a number of guys to gain 20-30m. Still some work to mould this side but this team will be producing the results when the league starts. Final score 15-27 ( 2 tries – 4 )
Our 1st team had a good outing despite missing a handful of regulars. This gave the coach an opportunity to blood a few newcomers and youngsters still currently eligible for U20’s. Our line-outs were superb, our defence held strong, our half backs looked impressive and a good result to keep building on. Watch the local papers for the full match report. Final score 27-19 ( 4 tries – 3 )
Our FIFO 5ths had to wait a few extra hours to get on the park out at Pinelands at the Police Rugby Club Day, it was clear proceedings were not running on time. The game had to be played with uncontested scrums , we only had one prop but still managed to run in two unanswered tries to finish 14-0 .
This Friday the 5ths host PROGRESS RFC – kick-off 7:30pm and Sat , the 1st – 3rds + U20’s are due to play Stellenbosch.
Congrats to a few of our guys who made the WP training squad , Ryan Olivier , Wes Chetty , Justin Fillies , Andri , Snoopy , Musti.
.
Good luck in this weeks prep.
