The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, SASFIN and the Direct Axis False Bay Rugby Club hosts RWC Quiz Night in aid of the fallen heroes of the game

With the upcoming Rugby World Cup on every rugby enthusiasts mind, the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund hosted a Rugby World Cup themed quiz night on Wednesday 22 July 2015. This event was proudly sponsored by SASFIN and hosted by the Direct Axis False Bay Rugby Club and The Bay Sports Bar and Restaurant in Constantia.

Guests were invited to round up a group of six self-proclaimed, rugby geniuses and enter their team into what turned out to be a highly competitive rugby trivia quiz. With incredible prizes on the line, teams fought hard to land in the top three on the leader board. At the end of the night the “FIFO’s” teams made up of Cape Town rivals; False Bay and Villagers rugby players won first and second place with the Direct Axis table claiming third prize.

The Players’ Fund has been commemorating 35 years of supporting rugby’s fallen heroes with a series of events focusing on fun and the camaraderie within the rugby community. This theme continued as guest speaker and Players’ Fund Trustee John Smit took to the stage and spoke about his experiences in the green and gold, sharing a few insider jokes and thanking all for coming together and supporting the fund which has become known as “Rugby’s Caring Hands”. Special mention was also made of fellow, former Springboks ; Ian McCallum, Peter Whipp and Hanyani Shimange (also a Players’ Fund Trustee) as well as former Western Province players Morgan Newman and Hempies du Toit who were all there testing their Rugby World Cup knowledge.

In keeping with the commemoration of the Fund’s 35 year history, the late Chris Burger’s daughter, Esmarie was also in the audience to honour the cause and to support her husband and well known Afrikaans singer, Desmond Wells who rocked the stage after the quiz master hung up his mic.

In a year scarred with a concerning number of catastrophic injuries the need for fundraising is a top priority of the Players’ Fund and it is through partnerships such as this one that allows for the continuation of the work done by the Players’ Fund.
