KROS' KORNER DURBELL
Our Chairman could not have asked for a better birthday present than that of this weekend’s results. It was only our U20 side that stumbled.
Our 4ths & 5ths were due to play this past Friday night but thanks to a lot of brotherly love & for reasons we don’t have to go into, the game was postponed till Friday the 27th June ( my Birthday so diarise both ).
The U20B team who haven’t played a great deal of matches due to postponements & cancellations, were let down again this weekend when Gardens had to withdraw their team due to lack of numbers.
The rest of the club made the long trek to Durbell & we were thankful the rain had stopped by then.
The 3rd side were first up & they never looked like losing & dominated all assets of play. From a spectator point of view, wrong decisions to go for poles when points should have been banked could have cost the team had Durbell been lucky to slip in a try. Final score 10-6 ( 1 try , conversion , penalty vs 2 x penalty )
The 2’s had a tougher game but also looked to be the stronger team and like the 3’s, vital points should have been taken when offered & it was too close a game for comfort with the Bay scoring the only try ( converted ) to 2 penalties from Durbell . Final score 7-6. It was strange to see our pack struggle in the scrums but they made up for it in their general play with some good strong running from Hyron who carried the ball well in the backs. Never great to have injuries, Sheldon came off with a dislocated elbow, replacement back , Yusuf took a bad knock to his shoulder, Meryck knee isn’t the happiest so we wish them a speedy recovery.
Our U20A side had a late start game & did well to keep Durbel to 0-10 at half time , in the second door, the hosts ran riot , final score 7-42
With a last minute change to the starting line-up, fly-half Andri was side-lined due to a bad spell of flu. In times like this, coaches always turn to their most valuable player, that being the scrum-half & Ridhaa slotted in well at # 10 ( you would also notice how he gets used at 15 ). Durbell came out firing & the Bay absorbed & matched the onslaught for the first 20min, then it was our time. Thanks to great conditioning, our team must be one of the fittest in the league & this showed. Big hits from our lads & solid defence was the order of the day. Again our pack dominated while our backs kept the hosts on their toes throughout the game. Sorry to see Danie come off with a sore knee & hope it is nothing serious.
Final score 21-11 ( 3 tries to I )
On Sat, our Crocks took on the might of the British Army who arrived 2 hours early to start their warm-ups whilst the old boys were only getting into their cars to come to the game.
Despite their physical presence & a lot of pre-game words to soften them up , the game went ahead in a great spirit with the Bay first to get on the scoreboard from a great dart from coach Bossie who off-loaded to Marius who had switched to receive the pass. Final score 5-12 – please bear in mind our average age was mid 40’s opposed to their mid 20’s.
Tonight the British lads from ITC Catterick are back at our fields playing the SA Navy – kick-off at 7:30pm.
Wed evening our U20B play Belhar U20B in a friendly at FB
On Friday night our 5ths travel to UCT to play their 4ths .
The rest of the club have a bye so enjoy the time off & may the bones heal fast.
